कवीर की कथा अकथ है। उनका साहित्य अथाह है। प्रस्तुत पुस्तक इसी अथाह की थाह लेने का एक विनम्र प्रयास है। कबीरदास की रचनाओ को लेकर कई ग्रन्थो का सपादन किया गया है । डा० श्यामसुन्दरदास द्वारा सपादित ‘कवीर ग्रन्थावली’ मे हमको कवीर दास’के काव्य का सर्वाधिक प्रामाणिक स्वरूप प्राप्त होता है । प्रस्तुत पुस्तक को लिखते समय उक्त ‘कबीर ग्रन्थावली’ को ही आधार माना गया है । कबीरदास और कबीर साहित्य को लेकर बहुत कुछ लिखा जा चुका है और आगे भी लिखा जाएगा। उनकी ग्रन्थावली पर टीकाएँ, ‘सजीवन भाष्य’ आदि कई ग्रन्थ प्रकाशित हो चुके हैं। सबमे कबीर के काव्य को समझने-समझाने का प्रयत्न किया गया है। इनमे प्रत्येक का अपना निजी महत्व है। कबीर के काव्य पर लिखी गई अधिकाश टीकामो मे प्राय छन्दो के भावार्थ ही दिए गए हैं। अप्रचलित शब्दो तथा दुल्ह पदावली को या तो छोड दिया गया है अथवा भावार्थ लिखकर विषय को चलता कर दिया गया है। इससे न तो पूरे छन्द की सगति ही बैठती है और न उराका अर्थ ही स्पष्ट होता है । ऐसी स्थिति मे जिज्ञासु पाठक की सतुष्टि नहीं हो पाती है और कबीर का काव्य कठिन, दुरूह, नीरस एव अटपटा कह दिया जाता है । मेरी धारणा है कि कवीर को जीवन और जगत का व्यापक अनुभव था। उनकी आध्यात्मिक अनुभूति अत्यन्त गहरी धी। अनुभूतिजन्य पारलौकिक ज्ञान को देश-काल द्वारा आवद्ध लोकिक भाषा मे व्यक्त करना यदि अनम्भव नही, तो दुष्कर अवश्य है। इमी वारण विश्व-चेतना प्रसूत ज्ञान को जब वैयक्तिक चेतनापरक मन ग्रहण करता है, तो उनमे रहग्यात्मक नागा समावेश स्वभावत हो जाता है । फलत अभिव्यक्ति भी रहस्यात्म हो जानी है. और बौद्धिकता की कसौटी पर कमने पर यह प्राय अपूर्ण ही प्रतीत होती है । कबीर का काव्य वहृत कुट नी प्रकार का है । उगो गाव्य को मानने के लिए हृदय की मात्र आवश्यक है। उनपा पाय बुद्धि-दिमाग की नान होफर ध्यान और अनुभव का विषय है.
The story of the poet is untold. His literature is immense. The present book is a humble attempt to fathom this immensity. Many texts have been edited regarding the compositions of Kabirdas. In ‘Kavir Granthavali’ edited by Dr. Shyamsunderdas, we get the most authentic form of poetry of ‘Kavir Das’. While writing the present book, the said ‘Kabir Granthavali’ has been considered as the basis. A lot has been written about Kabirdas and Kabir Sahitya and will be written in the future also. Commentaries on his book, ‘Sajeevan Bhashya’, etc. have been published in many books. Every effort has been made to understand and explain the poetry of Kabir. Each of them has its own importance. Most of the commentaries written on Kabir’s poetry have been given in the meaning of the verses only. The obsolete words and the bride phrase have either been omitted or the subject has been moved by writing the meaning. With this neither the harmony of the whole verse is settled nor the meaning of the ura is clear. In such a situation, the inquisitive reader is not satisfied and Kabir’s poetry is said to be difficult, arduous, dull, and awkward. I believe that the poet had extensive experience of life and the world. His spiritual feeling was very deep. If it is not impossible, then it is definitely difficult to express the experienced transcendental knowledge in the local language bound by time and time.
