यहां धर्म शब्द, पङ्कजशब्द के समान योग रूढ़ है। गिरते हुए मनुष्य का जो आधार होकर धारण करता है वह धर्म है । यह धर्म शब्द का अक्षरार्थ कहलाता है। और अनिष्ट से संवन्ध न रखनेवाले इष्टफल का साधन धर्म है। यह धर्मशब्द का प्रसिद्ध अर्थ कहलाता है । भगवान् कणाद मुनि ने वैशेपिकदर्शन में ‘यतोऽभ्युदयंनिश्रेयससिद्धिः स धर्मः” यह धर्म का लक्षण कहा है। अर्थात् जिस से लौकिक और पारलौकिक सुख प्राप्त हो वह धर्म है । और भगवान् जैमिनि मुनि ने मीमांसादर्शन में ‘ चोदनालक्षणोऽर्थों धर्मः’ यह क्रियासापेक्ष धर्म का लक्षण कहा है । अर्थ-जिस वाक्य के सुनने से कर्तव्य तथा अकर्तव्य कर्म का ज्ञान होवे उस (वाक्य) का चोदना, प्रेरणा, उपदेश और विधि नाम है; जिससे १ यह ग्रन्थ पूज्यपाद श्री ६ दुर्गाप्रसाद द्विवेदीजी, प्रधानाध्यापक, संस्कृत कालेज
