ज्योति या ‘ज्योतिस्’ का अर्थ है प्रकाश, तेज पुज-चमकीली वस्तु या पदार्थ । आकाश अनेक तेज पूजो से प्रकाशमान है। आकाश का विस्तार कितना है इसका अभी तक कोई पता नहीं लगा पाया । ‘प्रकाण’ या रोशनी प्रदान करने वाले कितने सूर्य या तारागण आकाश में हैं इसका पूर्ण जान अभी तक नहीं। हाँ, यह अवश्य है कि हमारे सूर्य की अपेक्षा और भी अधिक प्रकाशमान्, इससे भी बड़े तथा अधिक प्रभावशाली तेज पुञ्ज (तारागण) आकाश में हैं। वे हमारी पृथ्वी से इतनी अधिक दूर हैं कि उस दूरी को हम ‘परवो’ ‘खरवों मीलो में भी व्यक्त नही कर सकते।
‘प्रकाश’ या रोशनी की रफ्तार १ मिनिट मे १,८६,००० एक लाख छियासी हजार मील है। अर्थात् यदि पृथ्वी से १,८६,००० मील दूर कोई तेज रोशनी आविर्भूत हो, तो उस रोगनी की प्रकाशकिरणो को पृथ्वी तक पहुंचने मे १ सेकिंड का समय लगेगा। बहुत से तारागण पृथ्वी से इतनी दूर है कि उनके प्रकाश को पृथ्वी तक पहुंचने मे सैकडो वर्ष लगते हैं। इसीसे उनकी दूरी का अनुमान लगाया जा सकता है। ‘ब्रह्मपुराण’ के अध्याय २४ मे
आकाण के अपरिमित विस्तार का वर्णन दिया गया है और २५वे अध्याय मे भगवान् नारायण का, शिशुमार-प्राकृति का जो आकाश मे विराट् रूप है उसका वर्णन करते हुए लिखते हैं|
Jyoti or ‘Jyotis’ means light, dazzling object or substance. The sky is illuminated with many dazzling worships. No one has been able to ascertain the extent of the sky yet. There is no complete knowledge of ‘Prakana’ or how many suns or stars are in the sky, providing illumination. Yes, it is a must that there are brighter, bigger, and more powerful stars (stars) in the sky than our Sun. They are so far away from our earth that we cannot express that distance even in ‘Parvo’ ‘Thirty Miles’.
‘Prakash’ or the speed of light is 1,86,000 one lakh eighty-six thousand miles in 1 minute. That is, if a bright light emerges 1,86,000 miles away from the earth, then it will take 1 second for the light rays of that patient to reach the earth.
