आयुर्वेदीय वाङ्मय का इतिहास ब्रह्मा, इन्द्र आदि देवों से सम्बन्धित होने के कारण अत्यन्त प्राचीन, गौरवास्पद एवं विस्तृत है।लोकोपकार की दष्टि से इस विस्तत आयर्वेद को बाद में आठ अंगों में विभक्त कर दिया गया। तब से इसे ‘अष्टांग आयुर्वेद’ कहा जाता है। इन अंगों का विभाजन उस समय के आयुर्वेदज्ञ महर्षियों ने किया। कालान्तर में कालचक्र के अव्याहत आघात से तथा अन्य अनेक कारणों से ये अंग खण्डित होने के साथ प्रायः लुप्त भी हो गये। शताब्दियों के पश्चात् ऋषिकल्प आयुर्वेदविद् विद्वानों ने आयुर्वेद के उन खण्डित अंगों की पुन: रचना की। खण्डित अंशों की पूर्ति युक्त उन संहिता ग्रन्थों को प्रतिसंस्कृत कहा जाने लगा, जैसे कि आचार्य दृढ़बल द्वारा प्रतिसंस्कृत चरकसंहिता। इसके अतिरिक्त प्राचीन खण्डित संहिताओं में भेड(ल)संहिता तथा काश्यपसंहिता के नाम भी उल्लेखनीय हैं।
