उपोद्घात्
एक समय राजा जनकजी घूमने गये थे। राह में अष्टावक्रजी को आते हुए देखा। उन्होंने घोड़े से उतरकर ऋषि को साष्टांग प्रणाम किया। परंतु ऋषि के शरीर को देखकर राजा के चित्त में यह घृणा उत्पन्न हुई कि परमेश्वर ने इनका कैसा कुरूप शरीर रचा है । ऋषि के शरीर में आठ कुब्ब थे । इसी से उनका शरीर देखने में कुरूप प्रतीत होता था; और जब ये चलते थे तब उनका शरीर आठ अंगों से वक्र याने टेढ़ा हो जाता था। इसी कारण उनके पिता ने उनका नाम अष्टावक्र रक्खा था। वे आत्मज्ञान में बड़े निपुण थे और योग-विद्या में भी बड़े चतुर थे । एवं उन्होंने अपनी विद्या के बल से राजा के चित्त की घृणा को जान लिया और उन्होंने उस राजा को उत्तम अधिकारी जानकर कहा–हे राजन् ! जैसे मंदिर के टेढ़ा होने से आकाश टेढ़ा नहीं होता है और मंदिर के गोल किंवा लंबा होने से आकाश गोल किंवा लंबा नहीं होता है, क्योंकि आकाश का मंदिर के साथ कोई सम्बन्ध नहीं है, आकाश निरवयव है और मंदिर सावयव है, वैसे ही आत्मा का भी शरीर के साथ कोई सम्बन्ध नहीं है, क्योंकि आत्मा निरवयव है और शरीर सावयव है। आत्मा नित्य है और शरीर अनित्य है। शरीर के वक्र आदिक धर्म आत्मा में कदापि नहीं आ सकते हैं । अतएव हे राजन् ! ज्ञानवान् को आत्म-दृष्टि रहती है और अज्ञानी की चर्म-दृष्टि रहती है। इस कारण तू चर्म-दृष्टि को त्याग करके और आत्म-दृष्टि को ग्रहण करके जब देखेगा, तब मेरे चित्त से घृणा दूर हो जावेगी । हे राजन् ! चर्म-दृष्टि से अज्ञानी देखते हैं ज्ञानवान् नहीं देखते हैं।
ऋषि के अमृत-रूपी वचनों को सुन करके राजा के मन में आत्म-ज्ञान के प्राप्त होने की उत्कट इच्छा उत्पन्न हुई, अतएव राजा ने ऋषि से प्रार्थना की ” हे भगवन् ! आप मेरे घर को पवित्र कीजिए |

But seeing the body of the sage, there was disgust in the mind of the king that God had created his ugly body. The sage had eight Kubas in his body. That is why his body looked ugly; And when he walked, his body was curved with eight limbs. That is why his father named him Ashtavakra Rakha. He was very well versed in self-knowledge and also very clever in yoga. And with the help of his knowledge, he knew the hatred of the king’s mind and he considered that king to be a good officer and said – O Rajan! Just as the sky does not become crooked due to the temple’s curvature and the sky does not get enlarged by the length of the temple, because the sky has no relation with the temple, the sky is eternal and the temple is always, similarly, the soul is Also there is no connection with the body because the soul is immortal and the body is immortal. The soul is eternal and the body is eternal. The curve of the body, the original religion, can never enter the soul. Therefore, O Rajan! The knowledgeable have self-sight and the ignorant have the skin-sight. For this reason, when you will leave the skin-sight and take the self-sight and see it, then my mind will be disgusted. Hey Rajan! From the point of view of the ignorant, they see the ignorant and they do not see the knowledgeable.
Hearing the sage’s nectar-like utterances, a keen desire to attain self-knowledge arose in the king’s mind, so the king prayed to the sage “O Lord! You sanctify my house and some days there.”
