हरिवंशपुराण में तीन पर्व (हरिवंशपर्व, विष्णुपर्व तथा भविष्यपर्व) तथा ३१८ अध्याय हैं।
हरिवंशपुराण के भविष्यपर्व में पुराण पंचलक्षण के सर्गप्रतिसर्ग के अनुसार सृष्टि की उत्पत्ति, ब्रह्म के स्वरूप, अवतार गणना और सांख्य तथा योग पर विचार हुआ है। स्मृतिसामग्री तथा सांप्रदायिक विचारधाराएँ भी इस पर्व में अधिकांश रूप में मिलती हैं। इसी कारण यह पर्व हरिवंशपर्व और विष्णुपर्व से अर्वाचीन ज्ञात होता है।
विष्णुपर्व में नृत्य और अभिनयसंबंधी सामग्री अपने मौलिक रूप में मिलती है। इस पर्व के अंतर्गत दो स्थलों में छालिक्य का उल्लेख हुआ है। छालिक्य वाद्यसंगीतमय नृत्य ज्ञात होता है। हाव भावों का प्रदर्शन इस, नृत्य में महत्वपूर्ण स्थान रखता है। छालिक्य के संबंध में अन्य पुराण कोई भी प्रकाश नहीं डालते।
विष्णुपर्व (91 26-35) में वसुदेव के अश्वमेघ यज्ञ के अवसर पर भद्र नामक नट का अपने अभिनय से ऋषियों को तुष्ट करना वर्णित है। इसी नट के साथ प्रद्युम्न, सांब आदि वज्रनाभपुर में जाकर अपने कुशल अभिनय से वहाँ दैत्यों का मनोरंजन करते हैं। यहाँ पर “रामायण” नामक उद्देश्य और “कौबेर रंभाभिसार” नामक प्रकरण के अभिनय का विशद वर्णन हुआ है।

Dance and acting material is found in its original form in Vishnuparva. Bhalikya is mentioned in two places under this festival. Bhalikya instrumental musical dance is known. The performance of Hav Bhava occupies an important place in this, dance. Other Puranas do not throw any light in relation to bhalikya.
On the occasion of Vasudeva’s Ashvamegh Yajna in Vishnuparva (91 26-35), a nut named Bhadra is described to appease the sages by his act. With this nut, Pradyumna, Samb etc. go to Vajranabhpur and entertain the demons there with their skillful acting. Here the purpose called “Ramayana” and the episode “Kauber Rambhabhisar” are described in a vivid manner.
