किसी भी समाज या जाति के विकास और अभ्युदय में इतिहास की स्थान सदा सब से ऊँचो रहा है। मानव जाति के सुदीर्घ जीवन में शायद ही कमी ऐसा अवसर आया हो जब इतिहास की आवश्यकता न रही हो । इस बात को यों भी कहा जा सकता है कि कोई भी जन-समाज बिना इतिहास के अपने अस्तित्व को सुरक्षित नहीं रख सकता है। जिस समाज का इतिहास नष्ट हो जाता है उसके पुनरुद्धार में बड़ी कठिनाइयाँ पेश आती हैं। क्योंकि मनुष्य का प्रकृति-जन्य स्वभाव अनुसरण करने का है। कुछ व्यक्ति समाज में ऐसे भी होते हैं कि एक नवीन मार्ग और आदर्श समाज के सामने अमल करने को पेश कर देते है। किन्तु समाज में ऐसे बहुत ही थोड़े आदमी होते हैं, और ऐसे उदाहरण हमें बहुत ही कम मिलते हैं जहाँ श्रादर्शवादियों ने भी प्राचीन इतिहास का सहारा न लिया हो। अभ्युत्थान के लिए इतिहास मार्ग-प्रदर्शक एवं नेता का काम देता है। नेता का मार्ग अस्पष्ट और संदिग्ध भी हो सकता है। किन्तु इतिहास का बताया हुआ मार्ग अनुभव में पाया हुआ होता है। इतिहास जिन सिद्धान्तों को सामने रखता है वे कसौटी पर उतरे हुए होते हैं।
