मार्कण्डेयजी बोले-मुने! ध्यान देकर सुनो।
पूर्वकालमें गन्दनबनके भीतर जब देवर्षि नारद, इन्द्र और अप्सराओंका समागम हुआ था, उसी समयकी घटना है। एक बार नारदजीने नन्दनवनमें देवराज इन्द्रसे भेंट की। उनकी दृष्टि पड़ते ही इन्द्र उठकर खड़े हो गये और बड़े आदरके साथ अपना सिंहासन उन्हें बैठनेको दिया। वहाँ खड़ी हुई अप्सराओंने भी देवर्षि नारदको विनीत भावसे मस्तक झुकाया। उनके द्वारा पूजित हो नारदजीने इन्द्रके बैठ जानेपर यथायोग्य कुशल प्रश्रके अनन्तर बड़ी मनोहर कथाएँ सुनायौं। उस बातचीतके प्रसङ्गमें ही इन्द्रने महामुनि नारदसे कहा-‘देवर्षे! इन अप्सराओंमें जो आपको प्रिय जान पड़े, उसे आज्ञा दीजिये, यहाँ नृत्य करे। रम्भा, मिश्रकेशी, उर्वशी, तिलोत्तमा, घृताची अथवा मेनका-जिसमें आपकी रुचि हो, उसोका नृत्य देखिये।’ इन्द्रकी यह बात सुनकर द्विजनेष्ठ नारदजीने विनयपूर्वक खड़ी हुई अप्सराओंसे कुछ सोचकर कहा-‘तुम सब लोगोंमें जो अपनेको रूप और उदारता आदि गुणोंमें सबसे श्रेषु मानती हो, वही मेरे सापने यहाँ नृत्य करे।’

In the past, when the conflagration of Devarshi Narada, Indra, and Apsaras took place within the Gandanban, it is the same period of time. Once Naradji met Devaraja Indras in Nandanvan. At the sight of his sight, Indra stood up and gave him his throne to sit with great respect. The Apsaras standing there also bowed their foreheads with devotion to Goddess Narad. Worshiped by him, Naradji, after sitting in Indra, told me great stories in the form of skillful questions. In the context of that conversation, Indra said to Mahamuni Narada – ‘Devarshe! In these apsaras, which you find dear, command them, dance here. Rambha, Mishrakshi, Urvashi, Tilottama, Ghritachi, or Maneka – in which you are interested, see Usoka dance. ‘ Hearing this Indraki, Dwijneshtara Naradji modestly stood up and thought to the Apsaras, ‘You, of all people, who consider themselves to be the best in form and generosity, etc., should only dance here to me.’
