संगीत का विद्यार्थी वर्ग बहुत दिनों से एक ऐसी पुस्तक की मांग कर रहा था, जिसमें इन्टर तथा विशारद की परीक्षाओं में आने वाली थ्योरी (शास्त्रीय विवेचन) हो। वास्तव में उनकी यह मांग उचित भी थी; क्योंकि सरल हिन्दी भाषा में अभी तक कोई ऐसी पुस्तक प्राप्य नहीं थी, जिसमें ऐसे परीक्षार्थियों को मनवांछित सामग्री प्राप्त हो सके। विद्यार्थियों की यह कठिनाई प्रकाशक की दृष्टि में भी थी और वह चाहता था कि इसे तुरन्त दूर कर दिया जाय; किन्तु किसी भी निर्माण कार्य की योजना को क्रियात्मक रूप देने में समय तो लगता ही है। फलस्वरूप ‘सङ्गीत विशारद’ के प्रकाशन में भी वर्षों का समय लग गया।
भातखण्डे सङ्गीत महाविद्यालब, गांधर्व महाविद्यालय मंडल, माधव सङ्गीत महाविद्यालय, प्रयाग सङ्गीत समिति आदि शिक्षण केन्द्रों के पाठ्यक्रमों के आधार पर इस ग्रंथ की रचना की गई है, अतः विभिन्न केन्द्रों में परीक्षा देने वाले विद्यार्थियों को इससे यथेष्ट सहायता प्राप्त होगी, ऐसा मेरा विश्वास है।………
