इस कथा-संकलन का एक विशिष्ट प्रयोजन है, इसलिए यह परम्परागत संकलनों से कुछ अलग हो गया है।
संकलनों की कई दृष्टियां होती हैं।
संकलन किसी साहित्य-विधा के इतिहास या इतिहास-खण्ड को पूरा करने के लिए किये जाते हैं और प्रयत्न होता है कि निश्चित अवधि की सम्पूर्ण रचनात्मक प्रतिभा उनके माध्यम से अभिव्यक्ति पाये । एक विशेष अवधि में जो भी महत्त्वपूर्ण लिखा गया है, उसे शामिल करके विधा की शतरंजी बुनी जाती है। धी वाचस्पति पाठक की ‘इक्कीस कहानियाँ’ इस प्रकार का एक निर्दोप संकलन है और श्री विनोदशंकर व्यास ने ‘मधुकरी’ के चार खण्डों में कहानी के क्रमबद्ध इतिहास को देने का प्रशंसनीय प्रयास किया है । किसी वर्ष-विशेप या दशक को केन्द्र बनाकर भी इतिहास की कड़ी प्रस्तुत की जाती है। ‘मुक्त’ द्वारा सम्पादित ‘कहानियाँ-५५’ और सत्येन्द्र शरत् का ‘नये पत्ते’ तथा कालखण्डों में निकलने वाले संकलन इस दष्टि से प्राज की कहानी को पीछे की परम्परा से जोड़ने में अत्यधिक सहायक हैं। पाठय-क्रमों के अनुसार किये गये संकलनों को मैं जान-बूझकर छोड़े दे रहा हूँ; क्योंकि वहाँ न संकलनकार का कोई व्यक्तित्व होता है, न विधा-विशेष के प्रति उसका लगाव । कोर्स में लगवा ले-जाने की क्षमता ही संकलनकर्ता का एकमात्र गुण माना जाता है । इसी में प्रकाशक की सामर्थ्य भी मिली होती है। इसी वर्ग में संकलन का एक और कम पाया है और किसी अन्य उपयुक्त नाम के प्रभाव में इसे ‘शवयात्रा’ संकलन नाम दिया जा सकता है। इस प्रकार के संकलनों के नाम होते हैं, ‘भारत की श्रेष्ठ कहानियाँ, ‘विश्व की महान कहानियाँ’ या ‘ब्रह्माण्ड की कालजयी कहानियाँ’-इनमें आप देखेंगे कि चेखव, टाल्सटाय, हैमिग्वे इत्यादि के बीच संकलनकर्ता श्री छज्जूलालजी की भी एक कहानी फिट है । वस्तुतः यह महान नामों ३ः कन्धों पर अपनी सवारी निकालने की सद्भावना से किये जाते हैं।
विधा की महत्त्वपूर्ण कला-उपलब्धियों को स्वयं लेखक या सम्पादकीय रुचि और विवेक से चुनकर एक जगह संकलित फरना दूसरा प्रकार है। ‘मेरी श्रेष्ठ कहानिया’, स्वतन्त्रता के बाद की सर्वश्रेष्ठ हिन्दी कहानियाँ’ या ‘मेरी चुनी हुई कहानियाँ’, ‘पांच लम्बी कहानियाँ’ (राकेश) या मेरी ‘नये कहानीकार’ पुस्तक-माला इसी दृष्टि ने किये गये संकलन हैं.

The names of these types of compilations are ‘Best stories of India’, ‘Great stories of the world’ or ‘Classical stories of the universe’ – in these you will see that amongst Chekhov, Tolstoy, Hemingway, etc., a story of the compiler Shri Chhajulalji is also fit. . In fact, these are done with the goodwill of taking their ride on the great Naam 3: shoulders.
Another way is to compile the important artistic achievements of the genre in one place by selecting the author himself or editorial interest and discretion. ‘Meri Shrestha Kahaniyan’, ‘Best Hindi Stories of Post-Independence’ or ‘My Chosen Stories’, ‘Five Long Stories’ (Rakesh) or my ‘Naya Kahanikar’ book series are compilations done by this vision.
